Stainless Steel Cookware Care and Cleaning

Before using your cookware for the first time, wash each piece in hot, soapy water with a sponge or soft dishcloth. Rinse each piece under hot water and dry completely with a dishtowel to avoid water spots. Follow the same procedure during regular use. If scrubbing is necessary, use a nylon scouring pad with warm, soapy water. Do not use steel wool, chlorine cleaners, or oven detergents. Our stainless steel cookware is dishwasher safe.
However, the exterior polishing may be dulled from repeated dishwasher use. To ensure the highest quality shine, commercial stainless steel cleaners may be used. Apply such treatments using circular rubbing motions and rinse them off under warm water.

Use only plastic, wood or coated utensils on your nonstick pans to protect the finish. All non-stick coatings are covered under the non-stick manufactures warranty. Scratches or other damage caused by misuse of the non-stick coating is not covered under any warranty. Wash it in hot sudsy water, using a nylon scrubber. Most nonstick finishes are dishwasher-safe. Re-conditioning with a light application of cooking oil is recommended after dishwasher use.

Dishwasher Safe

Most cookware and bakeware can be cleaned safely in an automatic dishwasher. However, water with high mineral content, as well as certain detergents can darken some surfaces, stain aluminum or copper, and remove the "seasoning" from cast iron and from nonstick surfaces. Hard anodized aluminum will discolor in a dishwasher. Check the manufacturers instructions before washing your utensils in an automatic dishwasher.

Seasoning

Be sure to season your pans before using them to help prevent food from sticking or burning. To do this, rub a few drops of cooking oil into the panÂ’s interior and wipe clean. Repeat this step as often as you deem necessary.

Cooking tips and problem solving

  • Our heavy-gauge aluminum bottom and layered aluminum designs make maximum use of minimum heat. Care must therefore be taken when first using our cookware to ensure stovetop and oven temperatures do not burn your food.
  • If you are having problems with food sticking to the bottom of your cookware, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned, the heat is not set too high, and the stove or range top is level.
  • To avoid salt pitting in your cookware’s stainless steel interior, add salt after food has started to cook or boil.
  • Use wooden or plastic utensils with our cookware to reduce surface scratching. Cookware with glass lids and/or Bakelite handles and knobs must not be used in the oven.
  • Screws are used to attach the handles of some of our pots and pans. With time and extended use, some of these screws may loosen slightly. These can be easily tightened with a screwdriver.
  • To avoid warping your cookware, always heat your cookware gradually and never pour cold liquid into a hot pot or pan.

Chicago Cutlery® Care
For best results, hand wash your knives with a soapy cloth & dry immediately. Soaking wood handled knives in water can remove the natural oils from the handles. Dishwashing may cause banging against other dishes that can nick the edges. Additionally, the heat & detergent may have a corrosive effect on the handles.

Sharp knives are safer than dull ones because dull knives require more pressure for cutting, which can result in slipping. Sharpening knives with a sharpening steel can seem difficult at first, but it’s actually quite easy once you get the hang of it.

1. Hold sharpening steel point down on flat stable surface like table or cutting board

2. Angle the knife blade so that it is approximately 15 degrees from the sharpening steel

3. Pull the knife down & across the sharpening steel in a slight arc, pulling the knife handle toward you. Stroke the entire blade edge from base to tip.

4. Repeat on the other side of the steel.

5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 three to five times, alternating the right & left side of the cutting edge.

Knives should be sharpened after every couple uses for maximum performance. Use a scouring powder to clean & remove metal particles from your sharpening steel. After cleaning the steel, rinse it with water, dry it thoroughly & store it in a dry place.

Sharp knives should never be stored loose in a drawer because contact with hard objects can dull the blade & reaching into a knife drawer can be very dangerous. We recommend storing your knives in a hardwood block for safety & convenience.
